10,000 Hunza Lake affectees accommodated in relief camps: NDMA Spokesman

ISLAMABAD, May 24 (INP): The National Disaster Management Authority spokesman and Director General Operation Brig. Sajid Naeem has said  about 14,000 affected people by Hunza lake have so far migrated  and  about 10,000 have been provided shelter in 31 camps. The remaining 4,000 are living with their relatives. The affected people are being provided with medical facilities.
He said that water level in the lake had reached 354 feet and the gap between water level and the spillway remains 2.5 metres.
Talking to media persons here on Monday, he said that rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas and all arrangements have been completed to manage with any untoward situation. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has also been alerted.
Brig. Naeem said that lady doctors from Red Crescent and a non-governmental organization, FOCUS, have been sent to upper Hunza’s Gojal area, where there was shortage of female doctors.
He said the lake is 354 feet deep and 19 km long, and the water level during the past 24 hours has risen by 1.57 feet.
He said water level is 2.5 metres below the spillway and water can start overflowing from the spillway anytime.
He said that army engineers, Frontier Works Organization and soldiers have been deployed in the area to meet any situation and minimize the damage during the first hour of the overflow of the water, adding that they are in touch with the civil administration.
He said survey report has also been sent to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to make arrangements for any emergency in Shangla, Mansehra, Kala Dhaka and Kohistan.
He said the Gilgit-Baltistan government is responsible to provide medicines and food to the affected people whereas the Army is extending all possible cooperation to it.
Brig Naeem said that repair of the Karakoram Highway from Raikot to Khunjerab is the responsibility of China which has been informed to this effect.
