QUETTA mar 5 (PPI): Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Mir Changez Khan Jamali has called for promotion of efficient water conservation and management technologies by improving water management through knowledge based awareness campaign and technology demonstration to disseminate and propagate state of art water conservation methods. He emphasised to conduct and promote research on all aspects of water resources through developing new technologies for the emerging issues in water sector.
He expressed these views while chairing a high level meeting of the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) in Islamabad Saturday.
A detailed briefing was given by the Chairman PCRWR, Dr. Muhammad Aslam Tahir regarding the functions and role of the Council in water resources. Senior officials of the Ministry and PCRWR were present on this occasion.
The Minister was informed about the organizational structure of PCRWR, network of the water quality labs, various projects related to water management, ground water investigation, water quality, desertification, drainage, rain water harvesting and dissemination activities of the council. The role played by the Council in the recent flood was also highlighted in the briefing. The Minister was also apprised about the Research and Development activities, infrastructure programmes for on-going project enhancements and managements of Groundwater Resources in Baluchistan.
The Minister urged upon to chalk out policy recommendations and to advise government on water sector issues, stressing for monitoring of water quality for provision of safe drinking water to the people as well as to undertake research on desertification control, water management and conservation.
Minister was of the view that in past the water sector was neglected by misusing water which enlisted Pakistan in scarcity of water countries. He deplored that due to lack of water, the agro-economy of the country would be badly affected and the country would face shortage of food in coming days if emergent measures have not been taken, he maintained. He said that awareness for conservation of water is need of the hours for which a rationale strategy must be evolved to cope with the crises of scarcity of water.
The Minister acknowledged the role of PCRWR as an important Science and Technology player and assured the Council of his Ministry’s support in the future to develop water sector in the country.
