Report: ISI helped Mullah Omar flee Quetta

WASHINGTON: Fearing that Taliban leader Mullah Omar might be targeted by US drones, Pakistan’s ISI has helped him escape from Quetta to Karachi, where he has established a new council. The one-eyed leader of the Afghan Taliban recently found refuge in Karachi with Pakistan’s ISI assistance, the Washington Times reported quoting US intelligence officials. “Mullah Omar travelled to Karachi last month... He inaugurated a new senior leadership council in Karachi, a city that so far has escaped US and Pakistani counter-terrorism campaigns,” they said.

China activists, who wanted to meet Obama, detained

BEIJING: Two Chinese rights activists who sought a meeting with US President Barack Obama hours before he left Beijing said on Friday they were briefly detained by the police. Jiang Tianyong and Fan Yafeng said they were among several critics of China’s restrictions on human rights who gathered near the US Embassy in the Chinese capital on Wednesday, hoping to meet Obama. Jiang and Fan said plainclothes security police took them away for a few hours of “chats” late into the night.
