QUETTA: The World Book and Copyright Day 2015 is being observed today (Thursday) in Quetta as elsewhere in the country and the world.
To mark the day, a ceremony has been arranged by the Pakistan Academy of Letters at the Balochi Academy today.
Needless to mention here is that the Day is marked on April 23 across the world including Pakistan to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors for their contributions toward promotion of literature.
Different organizations mark the day with literary activities to promote book reading culture and remember those who have made outstanding contributions to social and cultural progress.
Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time.
It is “the right to copy”, but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work and other, related rights. It is an intellectual property form.
World Book and Copyright Day help increase people’s understanding of and adherence to copyright laws and other measures to protect intellectual copyright.
The 23rd of April is significant for the world of literature because it was on this day in 1616 that Cervantes Saavedra, William Shakespeare, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died.
It is also the day that the world of literature commemorates either the birth or deathof such famous writers as Maurice Druon, Haldor Kiljan Laxness, Vladimir Nobokov, Josep Pla, and Manuel Mejia Vallejo.
The day is remembered to pay tribute to books, the authors who wrote them and the copyright laws that protect them.
This day, formalized by a resolution adopted in 1995 by the 28th session on the General Conference of UNESCO, seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright.
