Effective treatment can combat fistula disease in women: experts

QUETTA: The senior medical practitioners of Balochistan have underlined the need for effective treatment to cure the women suffering from the fistula disease.
An effective treatment can combat well the disease, stated the senior doctor and Principal Bolan Medical College, Professor Dr. Saadat Khan, Dr. Haq Nawaz, Professor Dr. Tasneem Ashraf, Professor Dr. Naila Ehsan, Dr. Sadrik Jalal and Dr. Masha Khan while addressing a joint press conference on the fistula disease at Press Club the other day.
They noted with concern that upto 5,000 women suffer from the disease all over the country mainly because of the social inequality, outdated customs, lack of education and awareness, poor family planning facilities, shortage of the trained health workers and the non-availability of the basic health facilities at the local level.
They stressed that the government should pay due attention towards the health issue and pledge to rid the province of the disease by year 2015 under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The senior doctors on the occasion also called for launching extensive training programme for midwives so as to take well care of the pregnant women.
Moreover, they demanded of the authorities to make all the basic health units and rural health centers effective all over the province.
It would help provide the women necessary basic health facilities, they said.
