Call for raising awareness of cancer disease

QUETTA: The World Cancer Day 2016 is being observed today (Thursday) in Quetta as elsewhere in the country and the world.
An awareness walk and seminar has been arranged at the Bolan Medical Complex Hospital today. The doctors, medical staff and the people from various walks of the life and those recovered from the fatal disease would attend the walk and the seminar, stated the Incharge of the Cancer Ward of BMC Hospital, Dr. Zahid.
He said that it is very essential to create awareness among the general public about the disease and particularly that it is curable.
It may be mentioned here that the Cancer Day is marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.
The theme of the Cancer Day 2016 is: “We can. I can.”
World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020.
Taking place under the tagline ‘We can. I can.’, World Cancer Day 2016-2018 will explore how everyone – as a collective or as individuals – can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.
Just as cancer affects everyone in different ways, all people have the power to take various actions to reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities.
Moreover, the Social Welfare Department has joined hands with the Tanzim Idara Bahali-e-Mustehqeen (TIBM) to celebrate the Cancer Day.
The decision to this effect was made in a meeting held under the auspices of the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with the Tanzim Idara Bahali-e-Mustehqeen (TIBM), here the other day.
The Director General Social Welfare, Muhammad Hashim Kakar, Chairperson of TIBM, Mrs. Surriya Allahdin, high ups of the Health department, CENAR, representatives of the civil society organizations and personalities belonging to various walks of the life attended the meeting.
The meeting discussed the matters pertaining to observance of the World Cancer Day in Quetta.
It was decided to observe the Day with the aim to create necessary awareness about the cancer disease among the general public so as to fight it well.
It was decided to seek cooperation of the social welfare organizations working in the health sector in this regard so as to aware the people about prevention and eradication of the cancer through a comprehensive strategy and course of action.
It was also decided to submit recommendations to various donors in this regard as well.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director General said that we need cooperation of the national and international donors to eradicate the fatal disease of cancer in the province. In this regard, Pakistan Baitul Maal (PBM) should also extend cooperation providing necessary funds for treatment of the poor people, adding he stressed.
He proposed to establish cancer hospitals at the divisional level to overcome the disease.
He also stressed the need to contact the experts of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital in this regard.
